If you’re a fan of farmer’s markets or you have your own garden, you will LOVE this full-color book by Jennifer Loustau! She’s written a easy-to-read guide to all of the seasonal herbs and vegetables you’re likely to find on a vendor’s table or in your own yard. (And if you’ve been wanting to start a garden but didn’t know what to plant or what to do with what you plant, this book just might be the inspiration you need to get digging. Pretty soon, you’ll be enjoying dishes like Kale and Walnut Pesto and Stuffed Squash Blossoms. Yum!)
The book starts with a nicely photographed alphabetical list of everything from amaranth to zucchini. Along the way, you’ll probably find a few items that you may not have heard of before: salsify, scapes, purslane, and many others. Jennifer has packed an impressive array of recipes, cooking methods, and key ingredients into 208 pages! I especially appreciate all of the herbs she thought to include — most farmer’s market guides only focus on veggies. She’s gone the extra step with her sections on herbs and edible flowers. And did I mention the book’s nifty spiral binding? That hard-to-find type of binding makes it possible to set down the book, flip open to your recipe, and enjoy the luxury of the pages lying flat while you create your fresh-from-the-garden masterpiece.
