Zingerman’s is the #2 reason why I go to Ann Arbor. (The #1 reason is Dawn Treader Bookshop, one of my all-time-favorite used bookstores. Fellow bibliophiles, if you’re in Ann Arbor, don’t miss it!) To walk through the doors of Zingerman’s is to walk into Foodie Heaven — there are dozens of vinegars and oils, exotic varietal honeys, cheeses you just won’t find anywhere else, chocolates galore, canned tunas and peppers and capers that will knock off your culinary socks as soon as you get one gaze/whiff/taste…the list is endless. And you can sample anything you’d like! From food staffers who genuinely love their jobs! (The one who spent a sheerly blissful hour letting me sample and explore to my stomach’s delight was happy to drive two hours each way to get to “work” and back.) But I digress…the point is, this amazing attitude all started with two guys: Art Weinzweig and Paul Saginaw, the co-founders of one of the world’s best delis. (Yes, technically Zingerman’s is a deli.) Art Weinzweig wrote the Guide to Good Eating. Reading the Guide is nearly as euphoric as being in the store. Need I say more?
