The power of lemons in the kitchen never ceases to amaze me: they tenderize meat, keep cut fruit from browning, and bestow zing upon virtually any dish, whether it’s sweet or savory. A glass of cold water and ice with a twist of lemon is a very refreshing and simple drink, and a few small wedges of lemon peel tossed into the garbage disposal seem to clean it far better than industrial chemicals.
Imagine my delight yesterday when I discovered yet another use for lemons! Their extraordinary cleaning prowess came into play when I rubbed down a well-used wooden cutting board with some squeezed-out wedges. After rinsing the board, I sniffed it. Voilá! The lingering aroma of garlic and onions (which is mainly what I cut on that particular board) was nearly gone. Huh. Wonder what lemon’s next magic trick will be?

I use lemons to remove stains on fabrics and the grout on my countertop and in restaurants they are often used with salt and cold ice to swish around the inside of coffee decanters and remove the brown staining that builds up over a day.
