Technically speaking, this isn’t a grapefruit–it’s a Pomelo crossed with a Mandarin orange, hence it’s sweet character. (Pomelos pre-date modern grapefruits on the citrus chain and are much less bitter than their more-modern cousins.) Like all citrus fruits, however, cocktail grapefruit is rich in fiber and vitamins A and C. Unlike actual grapefruit, cocktail grapefruit is absolutely delicious when drunk straight. You could also section it and eat it with a spoon, but its light, sweet taste is so refreshing that taking the time to pull out individual sections would be gastronomic torture.
Mixing the cocktail grapefruit juice with cranberry juice makes another fantastic breakfast drink–a Sea Breeze without the booze. (For those who are curious about making cocktail grapefruit live up to its name, a Sea Breeze is made with grapefruit, cranberry, and vodka. A Greyhound is a simpler version: Sea Breeze sans cranberry. Add some salt on the rim of a Greyhound to make it a Salty Dog.) For a frothier, creamier breakfast drink, try blending freshly-squeezed cocktail grapefruit juice with a banana. What a sweet way to wake up!
